Week 16: Final

Craft: The tools used to create the image seen above are from self made brushes in the adobe photoshop program.  The Brushed were created from scanning an object such as keys, and the back of my cell phone to create new brushes.  I used a gray scale document at 2500 x 2500 pixels and then edited the image to my liking and went into the menu bar an clicked edit, then define brushes and named them.  I repeated this process for each brush I needed.  Once I had my brushes complete I used the image allotted to me and worked from back to front in placing down layers of color and objects to create the final image on the bottom the relates to the original image that was shown as the first of the three photos above.  To get the colors from the original image into the illustration, I used the eye dropper tool and picked out what section of color I needed and clicked in that area of the photo and it create the same color for me to use in my brushed, such as the blue in the shutters for the windows and the greens that are in the bushes. For the middle image, I simply turned off some of the layers that were showing to show what the finished illustration would look like with missing components.  You turn off layers by clicking the little eye that is located next to each individual layer in the menu, this causes the eye to disappear, meaning that your layer has been turned off.

Concept: The concept of this illustration was to recreate one of the five images we had to choose from in out digital imagery class.  I was only allowed to use the brushes that I created to compose the original photo into and illustration in photoshop.  I wanted this image to look remotely close to that of the original photo, but I also wanted to add my own little touch to it as well, which is why I used the keys in this photo.  They added some good texture to the shutters of the house and also to the walk way, and the white keys created a little fence around the bushes leading in towards the house.  The reason I choose to use these keys is because it went well with the idea of the house and having the door open.  They kind of went hand in hand.

Composition: This illustration is composed of several layers of different areas of the image to lay one on top of the other to create the final composition.  The final composition is composed of two different styles of key brushed and one of the design on the back of my cell phone.  The design on the back of my phone went well with the texture of the bushes.  This image was also composed to look similar to that of the original photo, but with my own touch of keys I gave it that little odd edge to it.

Week 15 - Kelsey

Craft: The first image is the original, then I imported it into Photoshop and used layers to complete the middle (finished) product.  I started in the back of the image, using the background green to make the first layer all green.  After this I added another layer on top of that to create the fence, which was drawn with a Bamboo pen and pad tool that was connected to the computer.  The next layer was to complete the bench on witch the individual was sitting on. I used the rectangle marquee tool to fill in most of the blacks and then came in with the pen and pad tool again to fill in what was left.  This project consists of the pen and pad that is attached to the computer to be able to use my hand to draw in what I needed such as individual strands of hair, and eye lashes. To make the shading and darker areas more crisp I used the blending tool to smudge the colors a bit, and then went in with an eraser tool and made it the softest possible to erase some of the edges of the blended areas.

Concept: The concept of this image was to take a picture of and individual from a family get together and turn a photo of them into a illustration.  I took this picture of my cousin Kelsey because she is in such a silly pose that it just seemed like the best idea for the photo.  She is always doing silly things like this so I felt that it was the perfect idea/photo to complete this project.  The final image is placed on this blog for just a reason to show what the image will look like if one of the layers were removed.  In this case the image turned out to look a little creepy, and if my cousin is bald, or possibly a zombie!

Composition: This illustration is composed of a series of layers working from the background to the foreground.  It is created from a photo of my cousin who is sitting on a bench in my Aunt's backyard for a family get together.  In this image you can see the background grass behind the fence, then we see the bench and finally her.  It is composed to make the viewer focus on two major things; 1. Her eyes that dominate the images, and 2. The orange spoon that belongs to a younger family member.

Week 14: Magic with Brushes

Craft: This image was created with using only photoshop brushes. I created layers for each different part of the image. The first layer was the black background with the textured brush colored green. I used the some textured brush for the cover of the book, but changed its hue from green  to light brown.  The swirl that come up over the book was created in another photoshop document to be turned into a brush. I did this by opening a new document in photoshop that was 2500 x 2500 pixels with a resolution of 300, and making sure it was set to gray scale.  I import my image and use the eraser tool to trim up the sides, and once complete I turn it into a brush.  To do this I go to Edit and define brushes, then I titled my brush Magic_1 and saved it to my photoshop brushed. Once the brush was saved, I returned to the document above and used the brush I created to make the book look surrounded.

Concept: The concept of this image it to show the dark magic that is incorporated with this book.  The book is as sketch of the "Book of Spells" that is shown in the Hocus Pocus movie.  I wanted to use a green swirl because when the book was opened in the movie a blast of green light the emanates from the inside of the book that can only be seen by the witches, so I wanted to show that same light that is in a smokey form lifting the book into the air.

Composition: This image is composed of many different layers have different kinds of brushes used to create the sense of the magic book from Hocus Pocus.  There are regular brushed that are used to compose the snakes on the corners, the eyeball and its latch, and the snake on the spine of the book.  It is also composed of some vector brushes that give a textured look to the cover of the spell book.

Week 13: Texture Collage

Craft: What I used to create this image was Adobe Photoshop.  I imported the images that I scanned onto the computer. The textured images are of a hand towel, football jersey, a dress shirt, and a leaf.  After placing these images in photoshop I used the magnetic lasso tool to cut out the image from its white background.  I also used the regular lasso tool to create the abstract shape of the tree. For the change in the grass color I clicked on Images then Adjustments, and went to brightness and constant to change the towel from blue to green. Once this was complete I created the fence, I changed the color using the hue and saturation under the Adjustments menu as well.  I used the rectangle marquee tool to crop out the shapes of the fence. I cut out one fence post, and one long piece for the horizontal part of the fence then just duplicated those pieces and put them together to form a fence.  The background is the image of a leaf that I rotated to look like sun rays.

Concept: The concept of this image was to use textured fabrics and things found in nature to scan into the computer to create a collage.  My collage is of a individual apple tree. I wanted the pick shirt to be used for the apples since it was already the right  color.  The reason the tree is blue is because I wanted to use the original color of the towel before I used that texture again.  I incorporated my football jersey into the trunk because the holes in the jersey are similar the the bums and texture that would be found on tree bark.  I also wanted to use the zoomed in view of a leaf because if look just like sun rays and it went well with the idea of a apple tree.  It gives that final touch that makes the image look as if it is in the middle of a prairie or an orchard and the sun is shining over head.

Composition: This image is composed of three textured items and two leaves.  The textured items are set up in such a way to represent grass, a fence, and a tree.  The leaves were set up to represent two different things.  One leaf is used as the actual plant. It is positioned at the bottom of the tree and the fence posts to resemble weeds.  The other leaf is positioned in the background as the light from the sun.

Week 12: Re-Color

Craft: The tools used to create these three images can be found in Adobe Photoshop. I opened my photo in photoshop and double clicked on the layer called "Background" to turn it into layer 0.  After this was done I went to Image and Adjustments, then changed my original photo to black and white. When the image changes I added a new layer from the layer button located next to the trash can in the layer window.  I chose a color to use for the background layer (Layer 1) and moved the it underneath the existing "Layer 0."  When the color was set I clicked on layer 0, and changed its blending mode from normal to multiplicity. This allows the black and white image to show through the existing color.  Then I created another layer (Layer 2) and placed it between layer 0 and layer 1. I chose a brighter hue of the background color, and used the paint brush to color over the bunny. Once this process was complete I used the eraser tool to clean up some of the edges of the bunny.  I created the final player and placed it between layer 0 and layer 2.  For this last layer I chose an even brighter hue and colored in the flower on the bunny's head and went in with the eraser tool again and cleaned up the edges. I used this process for all three bunnies.

Concept: The concept of this assignment was too use three different hues to lead the viewers focal point to two different sections of the painting.  They are created to have one notice one thing to the next. That is why the bunny is lighter then the basket, but the flowers are almost white.  This is because I wanted the flower to be the focal point of the image.  It was the one thing that I wanted to pop the most.

Composition: These three images are composed of my bunny Pfeffernuse (Phefer-noose) who we placed inside a milk crate, and places a flower on his head.  I am amazed that he sat there for the photo. Each images is composed of four individual layers; one being the original photo in black and white, and the other three are the changes in hue to bring out the focal point of the images (flowers).

Week 11 - Funeral Barbie Final

Craft: The tools used to create this final image were the rectangle marquee tool which I used to create the box. I made the size of the box with the marquee tool and used the paint bucket tool to fill in the color I needed for each shape.  I also used the rectangle marquee tool to create the holes that are shown in the box by placing another lighter purple layer on top of the original and then mapping out the size that I needed and pressing the delete button to cut out the holes where you see the toys.  The toys I played in between the two colored layers and then positioned them in the right areas in the box by using the move tool, and making sure the right layer for the toy was highlighted before I moved the toy.  I created a new layer with the layer button and then used the gradient tool to create the light purple and white background shown behind the boxes, then I used a rose stamp tool to add the roses in the background as well. Once the gradient and  roses were complete I changed the opacity to lighten them to give a more subtle touch to the advertisement. Again in this final project I used the "fx" tool to add the drop shadows to the box and the toys. The last tool I used was the type tool.  I used this tool to create the words used on the box and in the advertisement.

Concept: The concept of this ad was to create and display a toy that looks as if it could be placed in store and in magazines, but the actual toy itself was against many moral values.  I wanted to use a two page spread because I wanted this toy to be the only focus, and not have another add on the next page. The reason I put the roses in the background is because it goes along with the funeral concept, because there are floral arrangements placed through out the funeral home, also the roses play into the barbie style as well.  For the add I also wanted to use a more elegant type because it relates to the girly feels of barbie toys.

Composition: This image is composed of the Funeral Barbie in her individual box, and is positioned next to the Barbie Funeral Kit.  In the kit you can see the doll sized casket, tombstone, and floral stand.  The advertisement is composed of the doll box and the funeral kit placed upon a gradient and floral background whose opacity has been changed to about 65%. It also has a "limited time only" notification on the top left of the two page ad.

Week 10 - Funeral Barbie Package

Craft: The tools used to create this box were the rectangle marquee tool to create to size of the box that my barbie was to be placed in, then I chose a dark purple to fill the rectangle using the paint bucket tool. After creating the background layer I added another layer of the image of the barbie that I used in the original image of the casket.  Once the barbie was placed on the dark purple background, I duplicated the background layer and placed it on top of the barbie.  I grabbed the paint bucket and chose a lighter purple to fill this rectangle.  The I went into my tool bar and grabbed the polygon lasso tool to cut out the open areas shown on the box.  To create the side and bottom I used the rectangle marquee tool once again to line up the edges and create a thinner rectangle to filled and slanted.  I slanted the sides by going into the top tool bar and clicking on edit, then transform, and then over to screw.  Once this was done I put my mouse next to the rectangle and dragged down to give it the 3D effect. Then I used the brush tool, and changed my brush type to vector and chose a style, and placed it randomly across the box.  For the words I used the "fx" tool found towards the bottom of the layers and added a drop shadow and inner glow.  I did the same thing with the drop shadow for the box and the barbie.

Concept: The concept of this image was to create a box that explains the toy in the least amount of words, and gets the creepy message across from the design on the box. I wanted to used the orange behind the word funeral because it was my idea of incorporating the funeral sticker you receive for you car window into the box.  The reason I chose the colors that I did is because black was too common to use in this sort of concept.  I also chose it because in my town, when someone that works for the village (Police Officer, Fire Fighter, Mayor, Public Works, VFW, etc.) passes away, we hang a black and purple banner from our village hall.

Composition: This image is composed of layers of color and drop shadows to create the Barbie's box and the 3D effect.  It also consists of the barbie that I have used in the previous images of my misfit toy.  She is placed between two layers of color to create the illusion that she is inside the box.  This image is also composed of two different kinds of fonts. The first is used in the word funeral. Its a pretty plain style to just give the basic representation of the actual sticker, and the second is more of a elegant more common type that is shown on barbie boxes found in the typical toy store.

Special Edition Blog

Inspiring Work

Craft: The tools used to make these images range in different varieties.  The first image was created through oil on a canvas and is more of a traditional feel to the art realm, while the second two come from the modern wing of the Art Institute of Chicago.  The second photo I took was of a neon like that is composed of several different works that coordinate in a flashing rhythm to illuminate the shape of the familiar peace sign, and the last image is a collage that is in a remembrance to those who serve, and have served our country.

Concept: I chose these three images as the ones that inspire me most, because they all show a relation to peace and love in their own ways.  The first image shows the scene of a sunset, but instead of the sun shining through the three it is placed right on top of them.  When looking at this paining I feel relaxed and calm, its more of a peaceful feeling to me, its as if I was sitting on my front porch relaxing and just watching the sun set.  I chose the second piece of art work because I love the peace sign in general.  It just has so much power behind its meaning in this world.  What made me love it more was that is was created through neon light that were words such as "love, human, death, animal, nature, etc."  It pretty much just makes the statement that there is peace in all these things.  The final work of art I chose was the military collage.  This picture really struck home for me and I just wanted to take it off the wall and bring it with me.  Growing up in a military family, and working on my enlistment really makes you realize certain things about how we live our lives from day to day, and the outcome of our actions, and sometimes you just grown up faster than those around you.  When I saw this picture is made me feel so overwhelmed with emotion. I was pissed, I wanted to cry, and at the same time I loved it.  It was my favorite.  Definitely a good motivating collage.  This image demonstrates peace through the fact that we are protected by those willing to fight for our freedom and rights, but along with the neon sign; it confronts death and human nature as well...

Composition:  The first image was composed of oil on canvas and create to look as if it were towards the end of the day as the sun was just going down, but instead of seeing it glisten through the trees, we see this orange/red dot that registers in our minds as the sun.  The second image I took is of a neon peace sign that is composed of rods that are bent and put together to form the circle of the peace sign, whose purpose is to hold the words of the sign in place to form the peace symbol.  Some of the words that are on the sign are listed above, but I will list them again (love, human, death, animal, nature).  The last image I took is of a collage that is composed of two different photos, one being of soldiers carrying the flag covered caskets of fallen comrades and lining them up across the pavement, and the other shows a cemetery which appears to be Arlington. Both images were sliced into strips and placed one next to the other to create the dramatic effect shown above.

Week 9: Barbie Funeral Kit

Craft: In this image I used the magnetic lasso tool to cut out each of the shapes from they origianl background to rearange them in photoshop.  I took the Barbie out of a picture of three and used the edit menue to go to transformations and flip her horizontally.  Then I held down control and pressed the 't' bottom to scale her down to size and rotate her to look as if she was laying on her back.  I aslo used the eraser tool to cut out her eyes to fill them in with the paint brush to make them look as if they are closed.  To touch up the edges of her eyes I used the smudge tool to blend all the colors together.  I also used the smudge tool to turn barbie's smile into more of an emotionless smile.  The second thing I did was duplicate the casket by right clocking on the layer and using the "duplicate layer" option. I did this so that I could use the magnetic lasso to cut out the pillow, inside, and wing of the casket.  After I did this I placed it above the duplicate layer so that it looked like one whole casket.  The purpose of this was so that I could use the move tool to place Barbie in between the images to give the illusion that she was inside the casket.  After this I moved on to the flower display.  All I did here was use the move tool to place it in the top right corner.  The final thing I did was create the text on the tombstone by using the horisontal type tool and choosing the color, size, and style for the fornt on the tombstone. I want to use the barbie packaging to place the doll into because she does not come with the set. I might also try to place the set inside its own kind of packagin, but since I cant really find what I'm looking for, I might just use the adversiting look instead of the off the shelf stock look. Possibley combine them both.

Concept: The concept of the Barbie Funeral Kit is that children at a young age are experiencing a sense of death.  Its all about the emotional effect that is to be placed on the child. I was thinking about a slogan or some sort of caption that goes along the lines of "Barbie Funeral Kit: Captures the sadness, without real death".  Its not much at the moment, but I know it should be something along these lines.  The children could possibley burry the toy in their own backyard just for fun so I might try to play into that as well. I want this project to look as if it was an actual rejected toy that was recall from store shelves, or not even made into production.... but, the product idea and advertisement was made as a way to introduce the new toy. So this is why I want to show the advertising and packaging aspects of the toy.  I really like the way the child is shown playing with the Barbie set so this is one of the reasons that I want to try and incorporate both views into my project.

Composition: These images are composed of a Barbie Doll that's face was altered in photoshop to make her look as if she is dead.  Its also shows two caskets that when placed together fit around the Barbie Doll to look as if she is actually placed inside them, and a floral arrangement and tombstone as accessories to go along with the kit.  Each of these imahes were found online and changes to create the product shown on the top.  The websites which I borrowed these images from are listed bellow, as well as in the previous blog post.

Week 8: Misfit Images

Craft: I am planning on using the magnetic lasso tool to cut out the shapes in the images shown above to arrange them in a fashion to suit the funeral theme that I am going for.  I am going to start off by creating a first layer that has the barbie on the right shown only.  To so this I will use the rectangle marquee tool to cut off the remaining two barbies.  I will also use the pink casket and duplicate it so that I can use the magnetic lasso to cut away the inside of one of the caskets to give the effect that the barbie is actually inside it.  The tombstone will have "Barbie Doll" placed on it using the text tool in photoshop, and the flowers will be left as is.
Concept: The concept of this toy is to create a Barbie Doll accessories/play set that has not been yet created.  It is to play into the idea that children shouldn't be confronting death at such a young age.  So this toy allows kids to set up a funeral scene in their room or what have you and play with each other in what should be a "sad" moment.  So when playing with toys usually beings joy, this toy brings sorrow and grief.
Composition:  This photo when completed will be composed of one barbie doll who is positioned inside a casket.  There will actually be two caskets to feed into the illusion or Barbie being inside the actual casket, and it will also consist of a floral arrangement and a tombstone that reads "Barbie Doll" as accessories to add to the funeral experience for the Barbi goers.

Week 7: Final

Craft:   The couple that was located in the front of the mouth has been reduced to one figure that is lurking in the front teeth. He represents the sugars and things that come from eating a cup cake(hence the frosting in his head). The cupcake man has also been moves more towards the right of the image to give it a little more balance.  The next change I made was that of the two men that were standing at the light bulb. I got rid of one of them so that it would look more original, and more believable that the defender has captured one of the cavity people. In place of the figure I removed, I added another cavity creator riding in on a candy bar, he is holding a pick axe to show that he is a danger to the mouth and the teeth.  There is also a child that is running off in the distance that is leaving chocolate foot prints all over the mouth and teeth.  He is just being a nuisance to the defender who is trying to fight everyone off.

Concept: In this finished image of the collage a few changed have clearly been made. From the original first collage the figure were just placed in random positions and were not really telling the story I wanted them to tell, so decided to find more photos to add to the mix that will help get my message across and will also be more entertaining.

Composition:  The changes that have been made to the defender is that she is now shown as a bigger figure than most of the cavity people. She is also armed with a toothbrush in her hands, and with a roll of dental floss around her shoulder.  This is to show that the defender is ready for battle against what ever the cavity creators try to thrown at her.  She has also captured one of them and this is why there is a ball and chain shown around the figures ankle that is kissing the light bulb.

Week 6: Color Review

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Craft: I am going to use a different photo of a hand to create the illusion that Aarika is actually holding the tooth brush.  It was brought to my attention that is it just resting between her arms so I am going to take a photo of a hand in a similar position, but one that looks as if it would be holding the brush and use the blur tool to blend them together with a bit of color. I will also need to use a few tools to crisp out the edges that are around the light bulb and Aarika because when she is made brighter it is clear where some of her edges have been cut out, possibly add some shadow effects as well.

Concept: The concept of these images are that different kinds of bacteria and bad things for you teeth enter your mouth through your choice of foods, so I does appear that this concept is lost in the 4th photo, and some of the 3rd.  The man on the candy bar is a rodeo rider because he fits perfect with the idea of riding in on a candy bar.  His outfit is a little too busy for the image so I am going t o try and fix that.  Overall, through the anonymous letters that were placed with my images during class, all three letters seemed to understand my concept quite well.

Composition: Each image is composed of a different saturation, hue, and value changes, but all the images have the same arrangement of characters as to not confuse the viewer. 1, 2, 4, and 5 show different changes in color, texture, and style to the characters only. I wanted to experiment with them just a little. All images except one have changes exposure and changes in opacity as well.  Almost all of the images show the characters with a lower opacity except for number 4. I wanted the characters in number 4 to appear like they are chocolate that is in the mouth so they are composed of a new solid brown layer, that was finalized with a texture that somewhat resembles candy, or a chocolate bar. I am also going to try and keep Aarika and the light bulb the center of the attention in the photos, because it appears that in a few she blends in with the mouth and does not show much importance at first glance.

Week 5: Re-Collage

In this finished image of the collage a few changed have clearly been made. From the original first collage the figure were just placed in random positions and were not really telling the story I wanted them to tell, so decided to find more photos to add to the mix that will help get my message across and will also be more entertaining.

The couple that was located in the front of the mouth has been reduced to one figure that is lurking in the front teeth. He represents the sugars and things that come from eating a cup cake(hence the frosting in his head). Week 4: Collage

Craft: In this collage I used a digital camera to capture the figures and objects seen in the image above.  The tools used were my digital camera, and selected photoshop tool.  The photoshop tools consist of the magnetic wand tool, regular wand tool, eraser, and the magnetic lasso tool.  These tools were all used to cut out and arrange the images in the final product shown above.

Concept: In this image I was going for a random composition of photos of my people places and things.  The overall concept did not come to me until I finished the collage for the first time and it immediately made me think of the orbit commercials "dirty mouth? clean it up" and the object of the light bulb just went right along with that theme, seeing as a light bulb is bright and the orbit gum is focused on brightening your smile. The character known as Aarika seen standing on the light bulb is covered in white paint from when we were on a ministry trip, and composed with her body position I deemed her the defender of the mouth. As for the figures that are lurking around in the front of the mouth, they are suppose to be viewed as a threat to the mouth, like cavity creators. This brings me to the two males standing at the light bulb, they are cavity creators that have been defeated by the defender of the smile and she has recruited them to work as her helpers. They are NOT worshiping the light bulb, they are merely kissing it.

Composition: This overall collage is composed of five different photos that have been cropped and put together into the piece seen above. The arrangement of this collage is of a female figure shown standing on top of a light bulb that is accompanied by two identical male figures that are kissing the light bulb.  There is also a couple that is hiding between the front teeth and the lips of the giant mouth. They are in such a position to look like they are watching what is going on inside the mouth. So for the completing and easiest way to explain the composition: five different photos have been cut and cropped in such a way that four of them look to be as if they are standing inside of the mouth, and the mail bending over was duplicated and placed on the left of the bulb.

Week 3: People, Place, and Thing

Craft: The craft of these three images chosen was based on the most random pictures I could come about taking for this collage project.  The first picture is of a person drinking from a water fountain in a rest stop in Chicago, I believe I took this photo in Chicago near Millennium Park.  This picture was taken with a common digital camera tilted so that the image would come out horizontal.  The second photo was taken from the same digital camera, but in the location of my dorm room restroom.  This image falls along those random lines that I was going for with this project, and the last image is of a yummy bowl of mac and cheese.  For all three of these images the tool I used was my digital camera. So the medium was photography ... yay! So in conclusion the tools used are a random person and a chicago water fountain, my dorm toilet, and mac and cheese in a blue bowl.

Concept: What I was going for with this first image was more of a vulnerable state of an individual because I thought it would create a better effect in the overall collage with someone in an unexpected position as opposed to the normal walking, running, or jumping pose.  The second image was taken to create a more unexpected disgusting feel to it, I figured that having a background as a toilet (if I choose this photo) would leave people wondering about the nature of this overall collage once finished.  The last image is of a bowl of mac and cheese, I thought this would match well with the photo of the toilet because, well... I'm pretty sure you understand where this is going.

Composition:  The first image is composed of a male figure drinking from a water fountain. There is not particular arrangement as to how he should be positioned this was just a snap shot of someone getting a drink of water in a Chicago public rest area. The middle photo is composed of a toilet and tile floor, there was no particular arrangement to this image either, just a birds eye view shot of out lovely dorm room toilet. I held my digital camera above the toilet and made sure I got the whole thing in the shot. The last photo shown is composed of a blue bowl with a smiley face on it (unseen from this angle), a normal silver fork, and some yummy Kraft easy mac! I cropped this picture, so that it was not showing the desk that I was eating at.  I wanted this picture to be composed of just my night time meal :)

Week 2: Photo Shoot

Craft: The tools used to create this image are my military identification tags (dog tags), the tile floor in my dorm room, and my roommates Nikon camera.

Concept: What I was going for with this photo was to create and image that I would be able you crop and cut around in Adobe Photoshop, which instead I will not do because I like this photo just the way it is. I wanted a more artistic shot of my dog tags, so this is why the identification pieces are closer and the actual necklace is further off in the image. I wanted more depth in my photo instead of a straight on snap shot.

Composition: As stated in the 'craft' section, this image is composed of my tile floor and dog tags.  The position of the tags was not a long and grueling process, I just walked into the room, dropped them, and positioned the camera to where I thought looked best. The reason I took the picture on the floor instead of in front of a flag or some other sort of patriotic symbol is because i wanted more of an emotional sad feeling with this image, as opposed to a emotional pride/patriotic feeling.
